There is an american type of bamboo rods exactly made for this, picking up a long line and directly recasting while sitting in a canoe. Payne designed the Canadian Canoe, Dickerson the 8014 guide and Paul H Young the boat rod. These rods were 8 to 9 feet and 7 weight. Not for superlong leaders though, but for dry fly perfect.

Congratulations on deciding to try fly fishing.
I started my game fishing using a 9ft split cane rod that my grandfather had at the time.
That was 40+ years ago and given the choice on what to learn the art of casting I would choose a more modern rod then progress to a suitable cane rod.
You will need to see what style of casting you have to match the rod to your style.
Some of people are very fast on the casting stroke while others are slower and the correct rod will allow you to propel the line in a correct timed manner.
My advice would be to see if there is anyone in your area who can offer you a few lessons.
I have given lessons in the past to allow new anglers the chance to learn how to cast a fly.
The only issue at this present time is COVID and the problems it presents.
