Yatesy's MK1v Avon

Post by Macko »

Does anybody know the year it was auctioned, and who bought it, and what has happened
to it since.
Is it still being used. Just curious.

Macko.

If you mean the one he used on APFA I think Chris Ball has it.

No, not the Clarissa rod Mark, he means the rod that caught The Bishop.

Sitting in a private collection somewhere no doubt, Chris Ball would know. Seeing CY tomorrow, I'll ask if he knows.

How Bizarre. I was in the garden earlier and the same thought came to me.
I have no idea other than he sold the Walker built MKIV Avon and his No. 1 Barbus Maximus amongst others. I think at least 10 years ago maybe more.

I was at the actual auction, persuaded the wife to come along and when we got there
I fessed up that I was there for a reason, i had £900 in my pocket to buy that rod.

After a little moan about what we could do with the money she relented. Anyway, there
I was standing with the likes of Chris Tarrant and realised I might be out of my depth
money wise, so I said to the wife, lets go, you're right we could spend the money on something
we NEED. She said, if you want it go for it, other stuff will have to wait.

The rod came up for the auction, and when the auctioneer said, shall we start the bidding at
£2000, I don't know why, but I just burst out laughing, I think I was in shock . If memory
serves me correctly, I think it fetched £3200 and also another Lot from Mr Yates fetched
£2000. A good day at the office I'd say.

I think more like 20 years, I may be wrong.

I think it was less than 20 years but maybe more than 15.
I bought the No. 2 Barbus Maximus in 1996 and at that time I am sure CY still had the No. 1.
Presumably the £2000 item was the No 1. Barbus Maximus he used in APFA.
Is the £500 Rapidex the Yates one which went on ebay (it had a photo of him holding it in his study) about 5 or 6 years ago?
There's an story to that....
