Ambidex Reel on The Repair Shop.

Post by Fredline »

Steve Fletcher the horologist on the BBC Repair Shop renovated an Ambidex MK 5 or 6 in Episode 12 of Series 11 yesterday. He changed the ball bearings which I have not seen done before. You can see it on the BBCiPlayer.
If you have no grease with you, and your rings are full of ice, do not cut out the ice with a pen-knife but get your man to put the rings one by one in his mouth, and so to thaw the ice.

Even as a retired machine tool fitter I was impressed how he replaced the steel balls in that bearing!

I was waiting for him to open up the site casing to reveal some 55 year old grease but it never happened. I believe the original reel/winch makers were horological.
There are three things that improve with age: wine, friendship and water sense, and there's no short cut.
