Welcome t The Forum Martin, Sir.

You are amongst the fortunate of men, Sir ... if the rod is in undamaged and good condition, and dependent on it's age.

B. James and Son/Sons built fine quality rods, some of them amongst the most iconic.

The 'Avocet' is an 'avon' type rod, and sought after amongst the traditional angling community.

Some photographs would assist greatly in helping you assess the rod you have been lucky enough to receive.
"Beside the water I discovered (or maybe rediscovered) the quiet. The sort of quiet that allows one to be woven into the tapestry of nature instead of merely standing next to it." Estaban.

Yeah as this one of the earliest ones then all the rods seem to have been used but reasonably well looked after
