Book finds

Post by Muskieman »

I've been quite lucky over the years having found a few bargains including
River Piking £5
Fishing for big Eels £20
Big Chub £1
Red letter Days £5
There are a few more, some credit should go to my late mother, She visited all the charity shops looking for autobiographies and became quite adept at picking up fishing books. Just wondered if anyone on here had been as lucky.

I got a first edition of Angler at Large, William Caine for £10 from a charity shop, which strikes me as pretty good value, and it's not a bad book at all.

Confessions (BB) 1st ed from a standard bookshop (£25 I think), though I'm not that impressed with the book.

Face of England, Edmund Blunden (£1 or £2) - not a fishing book but some fishing references in it, and a great little book of English vignettes.

1st Edition Carp Fever £1.50
1st Edition Redmire Pool £1.50
1st Edition The Carp Strikes Back £1.50
1st Edition A Specimen Fishing Year £1.50
All of the above from the same shop on the same day!
A box of approximately 30 ABU Tight Lines catalogues from the 70's for 50p at a boot fair.
Specimen Angling by Design by Martin Hooper(signed) £1
Peter Stone - Big Chub £1
The Deepening Pool - signed, 50p from a boot fair.
Plus several others mainly from local charity shops and the odd boot fair.
I think I've been fairly lucky.

What shop and how long ago did you get those first four 1st editions from for such an amazing price?
There is no peace on earth like the peace of fishing in the early mornings

It was from a charity shop in Woodstock (a chance visit after a walk around Blenheim Palace), probably 2 years ago. I still pop in whenever I go to Blenheim-I live nearby and have an annual pass- and always buy something from there(may be guilt at getting such bargains?).

My best find was at a boot sale near Bridport where I found a box of good books all at £3 each including Deepening Pool, Big Chub, a couple of rare grayling books, Chub and Dace, and some pike books. All in excellent condition with d/j. Dealer price at the time was around £450 for the lot, and although I already had a couple of them I was very pleased. Also picked up A Piker's Progress for £3 at a boot sale.
