Thanks to the generosity of a TFF member ...

Post by AshbyCut »

... whose blushes I shall save by not mentioning his name (but I thank you most sincerely, Sir) ... today's visit by the Postman brought a totally unexpected and delightful surprise in the shape of this new addition to my now growing collection of the Angling Times series of booklets.

It's this very nice copy of "Fishing Famous Rivers - Somerset Waters" by Raymond Perrett.

Very nice indeed! I love those old books.

I'm intrigued! Who was Raymond Perrett?

He also wrote the "Eels" in the 'How To Catch Them' series, and was something of a Somerset specialist having also written "How To Fish The Huntspill River."

I hope this is he upon the cover :-

"How to Fish the Huntspill" was first published by Putnam in 1960, apparently ... and "Somerset Waters" in 1963" ... and "Eels" in 1958.

You must be referring to 'The Art of Angling' that came out in about 1957.

That would be Chapter 5, "Fish Pond Culture, in Part 9, "Science and the Angler," in Volume III of the lovely publication.

Raymond Perrett is described in the "List of Contributors" in that publication thus :-

"Mr. Perrett is a well-known writer and broadcaster on angling topics and is an authority on fish stocking, breeding, and culture. He is Fisheries Representative on the Somerset River Board."
