ABU 507 MK1 Problems

Post by MrCrabtree »

Just purchased a 507 MK1 from well known web site and it appears to have a few problems
Before I make a request to return it I would just like to check a few things.
The main problem is turning the handle it all feels fine but after pressing the front release and then turning the handle to close it, the mechanism
makes a sound like a machine gun, even without the spool itself being fitted. If I backwind and the turn the handle forwards the noise stops. I have noticed that the bottom edge of the black plastic piece attached to the pin and spring has a small piece missing which appears to have chipped off.
Also did the MK1 have only one pin or two as there is a vacant hole and there appears to be no anti reverse. Did the 507 have that facility or is just it has been removed?
Many thanks in advance for any assistance in this matter.

My 507 has one pin - but there is another hole in the rotor head. Same as the other ABU c/f series - that I have seen.

Can you backwind or does it not go backwards?- - -
If you can backwind the anti-reverse has been removed.
If you go to backwind and it stops - the head will rotate to give line - dependent upon the clutch setting on the side of the handle.

I do have a double pin rotor head for 501/506.

Mike the part you need is called the sled.
I have only just recently got rid of most of my Abu parts otherwise I would send you one but they are still available.

Wal.

Many thanks for the information. I am so disappointed that it has the two faults
I will contact the seller and await his response.
Thanks again

I think a lot depends upon the price paid - a good one in working order is nearer the £100 than the £50 mark or below.

Hi Olly
Many thanks for your comments
Will order the sledge but not sure if I will replace the anti reverse as it seems to be a lot of hassle to fit it

Not sure if this is what you are on about but on my 503, 505 and 507, if the drag is loosened off to its lowest setting and you push the line release in then turn the handle to re-engage the pick up pin it will make a noise like a machine gun, this is not a fault, you just need to tighten the drag.

Hi SnooperClooper
Thanks for that you have solved the noise problem. I didn't realise that the drag setting could be too lose and it appears to work perfectly well now that I have tightened the drag. However I will still get a new sledge as there is a definite chip in the existing one and that could lead to future problems
Many thanks again to both you and Olly
What a great Forum.
Mike
