Baits for Crucian Carp
Come on all you crucian heads, what baits do you use for crucians. My favourites are sweetcorn and krill pellets. Any unusual alternatives out there?

Sweetcorn, bread and red maggot for me.

I fished one water that held only a small head of crucians and almost invariably they were caught on soft cheese such as Kraft cheese slices despite anglers fishing with more usual baits.

Always had best results with a little bit of bread flake. Fresh loaf straight from the bakery, I usually eat half of it myself on the way to the pond.

i remember reading somewhere that dairylea was good so i bought some triangles but it was so soft it was unusable, so can you tell me how you use the slices.Phil Arnott wrote:I fished one water that held only a small head of crucians and almost invariably they were caught on soft cheese such as Kraft cheese slices despite anglers fishing with more usual baits.

I'm often tempted to use one of these
But the baits mentioned above are probably all you need, its just hitting the bites that's difficult.

I used to fish for them up at Quarry pool by putting a small piece of cheddar on the hook. It works, they like the creamy taste of mild cheddar, the smaller the chunk and hook the better.Bjp wrote:i remember reading somewhere that dairylea was good so i bought some triangles but it was so soft it was unusable, so can you tell me how you use the slices.Phil Arnott wrote:I fished one water that held only a small head of crucians and almost invariably they were caught on soft cheese such as Kraft cheese slices despite anglers fishing with more usual baits.

Dave, save that for otters.
God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling.

Re: Baits for Crucian Carp
I'd say anything they haven't been caught on before. They learn quick and once caught on a bait (or even in a swim) will often not respond to the same bait for some time. If you know what 'everyone else' is using, use something else. I've caught on most of the above and gilt tail worms are also good, but with the exception of small fish and maggots, I've yet to have big bags on consecutive sessions in the same swim on the same bait.
