I've just noticed that the ebay book is signed by Yates and others so its not the rip-off I first thought it to be.

If you click on the book image in that Amazon advertisement you get the short section written by Chris Yates, entitled A Chain of Ponds.
I too grew up nearby and sadly the village of Burgh Heath is now intersected by the Sutton By-Pass, the A217. All the ponds, bar one, have been filled in and built upon, the presence of newts insufficient to save the waters.
One bright note, however.....if you look at the ponds on Google Earth's Streetview...there is a young lad fishing the pond! It looks as though he has spotted the Googlebus and if stretching his arms to show how big the fish are...............go to outside 36 The Green, dive down and spin to look at the pond ;-)

Most kind, Weyfarer....you might just as easily have said I have too much time on my hands.
I don't ever remember Burgh Heath as quite the village Chris does, but then I didn't move there until 1963, by which time the A217 Reigate Road was already a large and noisy dual carriageway, but in those days there really was so little traffic on the roads, compared with today. Indeed I used to ride a motorbike from there to your old neighbourhood, Pirbright, to watch the Scrambles around 1970 and I might see no more than a a couple of dozen cars on the whole journey.
Quite an area for noted anglers, not including myself of course, Roger Wyndham-Barnes was just up the road in Banstead( where Chris joined the angling club at the direction of his milkman), and also Richard Garner of Day Ticket TV fame.

Roger is well worth booking for a trip on his boat at Marlow weir.Nobby wrote:Quite an area for noted anglers, not including myself of course, Roger Wyndham-Barnes was just up the road in Banstead( where Chris joined the angling club at the direction of his milkman)
Roger is a member of the GSC and has plenty of excellent tales and knows the river like the back of his hand. I had a great day on the boat with Guido (Jon Berry) a while back.
