Repair for a chipped centrepin spool.

Good afternoon gentlemen,

I have a reel DIY question related to a small chip on the spool of one of my centrepins.

Although the chip in question is not prohibiting me from using the reel, my experience is that a fast moving barbel makes said chip a little uncomfortable under one's thumb! Do any of you fine chaps have any advice for buffing or filling a chip, or do I just need to toughen my thumb up?!

It depends on the type of reel but a lot of dings or deep corrosion damage can be smoothed out by machining. Some spool rims are very thin however and filling is probably the best option.

Very easy, you mold it in your hand, it goes all warm, you mould it to shape, then sand it 24hrs later, it matches in well.

Chip in metal can be repaired with cyanoacrylate and bicarbonate of soda. This mixture sets very hard and once built up can be filed/smoothed back down to the original profile. The technique is to apply layer of glue, sprinkle bi-carb, when it's set, more glue, more bicarb etc. I've used it a few times on 'non fishing' things.

The internet is your friend, but beware; the fumes released during curing are toxic, only use this method outside and keep your face away from the fix until it's gone right off.
