Reel Therapy

Post by JW1 »

Each year for the Jolly on the Wally I like to make a new bit of kit to take with me, this year I decided on a light weight Slater latch wooden reel to pair up with the 9 ft rod from last year. Finding a 4" narrow drum Slater latch reel was surprisingly easy and for the princely sum of £13, I acquired a job lot of 6 assorted reels from an auction site.

A bit of spit and polish soon had it looking good again, a little copper plating on the spindle took out much of the wobble and making up a new line guard completed the look. There was no ratchet on the reel so I made a lightweight brake to stop the line spooling off when I fall asleep.

It balance well with the 9ft rod and I took it to the Jolly but with only a 6" specimen gudgeon to my credit, took no prizes
Now I had 5 spare reels that I really didn't need, there was a perfect Bakerlite reel in the lot which spun like a gooden, so I polished it up and dropped it of in the charity shop. The remainder sadly I was forced to give them the once over ,

Some of them needed quite a lot of work but good practice especially letting in pieces of wood into the broken rims and then staining them to blend in.
The thing is what do I do with another 4 wooden reels which I will probably never use?

Beautiful work. The all look stunning. I would like to know more about copper plating as well.

There is certainly something about wooden reels, I have a couple and a zephyr on its way to me. You’ve made a marvellous job of restoring those :Hat:
