Bream Slime

Good afternoon people.

I have a small problem, well, its not so much a problem as puzzle .

How do you remove bream slime from a traditional style landing net ?


One of mine got”slimed” a while ago, I have tried all sorts to get rid of it,bunging it in the washing machine, soaking in boiling water with industrial strength fairy liquid, soaking in Dettol, soaking in dishwasher tablets…. all seem to get the net nice and clean but there is still slime “residue “ that is some how wound around the mesh. It has turned brown and when dry scrapes off with a fingernail, but I dont think I have enough time left on earth to remove it all strand by strand .

I really need something to dissolve the slime residue and leave the net sparkly clean .

All suggestions greatefully recieved, well, at least those that dont involve burning the net and buying a new one.

Lay it on the grass overnight and let the slugs eat it. Or wait until it dries out and scrub the net with an old scrubbing brush.

I have a vision Wal , Bream slime totally vanished.


Replaced by Slug Slime

I cannot stand slugs , hate the little beggars .

The scrubbing brush may work though .

I remember night fishing and seeing my net covered in black slugs. On close inspection they were giving my net a real good going over.
Slug slime is water soluble David so thats easy to get off haha.

If you think bream slime is tenacious stuff, pray you never catch a Wells catfish!

Caught plenty of moggies - - but bream slime on the net is worse. Hot soapy water is what U use.

However cat slime on your tee shirt is far worse - throw the 'T ' away!! I seems never to come off!!

Get yourself a 5' garden cane. Araldite a medium stonfo disgorger in one end. Use it to unhook the bream in the water.

Smart move!

While I've not been there for several years, I've enjoyed several trips with friends to fish for Wells at Riba-Roja d'Ebre.

Whoever had just caught the most recent fish received the dubious accolade 'The Lord of the Flies'!

PS: My dodge with bream slime is to get it off the net as soon after it gets on as possible.

Immersing the mesh (not quite to the rim) and whipping it smartly from the water, leaves a lot of the fresh slime behind - shake and repeat as necessary. (If you're 'bagging up', simply leave the mesh immersed in between fish and do the 'dip and whip' routine before packing the net away).
