I've never read any of his work, would those with knowledge please recommend the best book to get a full flavour of the man ?

I love them all but, The Autumn Road to the Isles has a certain magic.
Confessions of a Carp Fisher is a must.
Little Grey Men is mad but enthralling as is the follow up, Down the Bright Stream.
Brendon Chase will make you wish you were young again.

Once you have read a couple of those, you will either leave him be or read everything he's done. I hope you fall into the latter and find some quiet places to sit and read them.

Brendon Chase for me. It is in my top 5 of books.

Of his angling books Confessions is the definitive work to read.
Be quiet and go a’angling (published as Michael Traherne) is very good as is Wood Pool.
Ramblings of a sportsman-naturalist gives you a flavour of his wide interests and writings.
For fiction then The Little Grey Men and Brendon Chase are wonderful.

"Be Quiet and Go A-Angling" is the one I like best, possibly 'confessions' a close second. Both are good. I enjoy his general shooting and wildfowling works nearly as much, and am very fond of "The Idle Countryman".

Although not a fishing book "Manka the Sky Gypsy" is an excellent read.

I recently found in a charity shop, "Best of BB" which compiles snippets of several of the books mentioned above.

Just ordered a copy from Abe Books.

“The Fisherman’s Bedside Book” compiled and illustrated by BB is a good read.
The only other book by BB that I have read is “Confessions of a Carp Fisher” and that is really good.

Oh to be at my “Happy Place” where nothing matters but the being there.

A second vote for "Be Quiet and Go A-Angling". Probably my all time favourite book.
