I've had one of these for a while and remember seeing them in the very dim and distant past - without ever knowing what they were called.

Such things bug me, so I thought I'd share this picture I came across that solves the little mystery!

I've got one myself, but I've not used it for years.
They do work.....
Just noticed that they were made in Sheffield.
I had no idea.

I wonder why the indicator is placed so far up the rod in the diagram?
And also why it is called "Harlow"?

Possibly by the same makers as the large diameter Leeds type reels. I have one but never knew anything about it.

I always thought the Harlow reel came from near Harlow in Essex! It appears access to the spindle/bearings is quite awkward hence my liking the design for trotting but preferring the old Leeds 5in.

I too remember the bite indicator - or one very similar - back in the late '60s. The lower part was like an inverted V rod rest with the top section being & working similar to a lift float! But much closer to the reel in order to able to set the indicator.

My old fella used one of those as he preferred it to a swing tip! Question is, is it buried in one of my boxes or one my brother has!
