Pike Wire Traces

Today I have made half a dozen pike rigs. Two trebles 4" apart on an 18" length of wire with a swivel on the other end. I had not made any for years and really enjoyed making them.

My question is how or what do you use to store you finished pike rigs when you go fishing.

I use a rig bin nowadays but for years I used to wrap them around a length of insulating foam, put a pin in the swivel them shove the lot into a reinforced Pringles tin (wrapped in tape to strengthen it)

To make the insulating foam a little smaller in diameter I'd split it and cut half an inch or so off, works a treat.

By the way, don't get too firm over the use of trebles, they may be traditional but single hooks or one treble and a single (single lower down) can reduce deep hooking and tangles in nets.

Ditto but I have used circles for a few years now, give them a try. No need to even open the pike's jaws as the hooks set in the scissors. Here's a pic of the trace used 4/0 hook to carboflex, also two I had just after dawn last friday morning.

Thanks chaps, looks like I will give the single hooks a try.

I will make some up tonight, how did you tie the hook Isis.

Hi Mark, tied like the knotless knot. From the shank up through the eye, seven turns back down the shank and threaded through the eye again. Trust it, it doesn't work loose.

Is that similar to this video Isis, although he is talking about hooks for catfish.

Yes Mark exactly the same. I used to use Varivas circles but found the tempering was a bit unreliable as the very tip of the point would turn over on a pike's jaw. Now import Gamakatsu 221414.
If you look carefully at the pic you can see the problem. Both these hooks were only used once.
I've had no such problems with the Gamakatsus.

I've been using barbless single hook rigs for pike deadbaiting for a couple of years now since I started to take my son pike fishing as I didn't fancy him messing about with trebles. He's had pike to 10lb and we haven't had one come off yet.
