Go to Loch fly?
At the end of May I'll be fly fishing in Wester Ross lochs for wild brownies, so I'm in the process of improving my fly collection. On the past my go to fly has been the blue zulu although last year I also did well using some mini muddlers that my son made me.
So just wondering what your go to flies are? The ones you tie on first and have the most faith in.

Not in Scotland, but in Wales and in Cumbria, for wet fly it’s a Peter Ross, and for dry fly at that time of year it’s a Hawthorn Fly or a Heather Fly, actually very similar.

Quite a while since I've fished a loch or lough but I always liked to make room for a Wingless Wickham or Silver Invicta.

Personally I love a butcher and variations on the theme. Silver or gold wrapped. I do like a bit of blue in the tag end too.

I have laid aside business, and gone a'fishing.

Great replies thanks. Ordered some Peter Ross and Wickhams a few days ago, among others like Bibio and Loch Ordie. I'll let you know how I get on.

Very envious of your upcoming trip, I hope it goes well and the fish are obliging.
A combination that I have used when bites are hard to come by is a spider on the dropper and a jungle cock cormorant on the point. It has proven its worth on many a frustrating day.

Zebra midges and Black Beauties do alright in our still waters. Black Pennell is also a good choice as with spiders.
The browns here in Colorado like darker colored flies. I have noticed black and red together target browns nicely. If its like that where you're going you may want to take flies that have that same coloration.
Rainbows I have noticed like brighter colors.

Cheers. That concurs with what I've read and with what a friend of mine who regularly fishes that area of Scotland has told me!Iasgair wrote: ↑Tue Apr 19, 2022 7:09 pm Zebra midges and Black Beauties do alright in our still waters. Black Pennell is also a good choice as with spiders.
