Solid fibre glass

Post by Homer Simpson »

I am pushing my luck here a bit……… regarding it being traditional.

I want to make some quiver tips.
If I acquire an old solid glass rod, can you rive it, much like a length of wood or do the fibres go all over the place.

I was shown by Bill Watson of "Floatmaker's Manual" fame how to make the fibreglass tips for his long antenna floats. He split the the fibreglass using a knife on the end grain creating thin sections which he then placed in a drill and sanded down into round sections. I use the same technique to make quiver tip sections. You are best wearing googles and definitely a mask when sanding. I think fibreglass make better quiver tips than carbon as the are softer. Bill Watson also made quiver tips like this which he then glued into fly rod blanks to make very soft and sensitive quiver tip rods.

The shreds/dust is or can be lethal - look at fibreglass cladding!

Cleaner to buy the tapered tips as blanks to finish yourself.

Will they be screw-in versions or spliced in?

I have made a rod out of a ( c word) fly rod that I bought in Walmart 24 years ago!
I must give it a run out as I had sort of forgotten about it.
I made it for general use on the canal when I want to go on my bike, and thus travelling light.

Blanks sounds a better plan, any idea where I can obtain.
I have a woodturning lathe so shaping them should be no problem.
My idea is a longer than the usual 18" spliced ones.

I spliced a glass quiver tip into a glass ledger rod years ago.It didn't work very well due to my inexperience. There was a terrible flat spot at the splice.I believe they were called "donkey tops"
You may be able to get lengths of glass fibre from a good model/hobby type shop.

Have a look at East Coast Fibreglass Supplies. They have fibreglass dowels in various diameters and lengths.
Hope this helps.

I found fibreglass dowels - used for blinds - on th'eBay! 3mm or 4mm - to taper yourself - or to use in my case as float tips/bodies.

Been making donkey tops and splicing quiver tips for many years. You may well get a flat spot of an inch or so - it is rather like doing spliced float rod tips. Glass to glass is OK providing you don't use to thick a butt or too steep a taper.
