Unmissed old stuff

Post by Stathamender »

I moved house towards the end of last year and took the opportunity (under the urging of Mrs E) to dispose of some of the odds and ends I'd accumulated from buying auction lots. Among them were these two horrors:

It is years since I seen a pike gag.
I must say it was a barbaric piece of equipment as was the gaff.
I am so glad these are things of the past.

The gaff is still useful. Used mine in the autumn to pull walnuts off a couple of trees on the Thames path.

Or retrieving a reel dropped in the water. Or as a backscratcher for a particularly intense itch.

Yep - a gaff can still be useful - even to adjusting your keepnet! Examining flotsam & jetsam as it goes by including windblown brollies.

When out piking and having a chat with another piker who use's trebles (must add that I don't use trebles anymore) I usually ask them if they use a gag and they say no,then I ask if they use a gaff and they say no,then I ask them why are they still using trebles, they should be in the same bin as the gag and gaff.

I don't go piking anymore for the simple reason that I don't like taking the hooks out, even singles, I always think I'm going to get bitten

According to Barrie Rickards (who should have known if anyone did) what you have to do is: lay the pike on its side and lift the gill cover from behind, this will cause the pike to open its mouth and you can usually get the hooks out then with forceps.

There are many uses a gaff can be put to. For example it can be used to retrieve one's toupee if, at some soignée dinner party or another, one is overcome by a fit of coughing and it falls into the soup tureen.
