John Rocque Lake 1735

This is part of the John Rocque map of the Wanstead Estate development of 1735. I wonder what was on his mind or just what was he on when he drew up this unusual lake design?

Well I don’t know what he thought but as a cartographer I guess he was just mapping out what was there - the person who needs to take at least some of the responsibility for the design of this would have been the architect Colen Campbell in a playful mood by the looks of it or possibly he was asked to put this into the scheme by his client and benefactor Richard Child - whoever was responsible I think it’s a great looking design with two rather nice bays by the looks of it :Chuckle: it is an intriguing post I have to say.
