Making landing net heads?

Hello all,

I am in some serious need of help! My initial attempts at making nets have led to a number of broken bits of wood and the frequent use of colourful language. Could someone please point me in the direction of some resource material to read on the subject?

Thank you,

Llyr

Firstly have you got all the bits you need? The spreader block is often difficult to source. You'll also need former to "set" the bent frame to. Wood wise go for ash ideally with a VERY straight grain. The application of steam means you can practical tie it in knots!

I had originally been trying to steam and bend some oak dowel around a form I made but the oak didnt want to bend very easily and the grain became terribly raised. I have also tried the heating of a garden cane and working it that way into a standard spreader block that is easily available on ebay.

I think I need to make myself a steamer box, get some ash strips and find a better spreader block!

A bicycle wheel rim of the right size could make a good former.

Here you go. This is how I made mine. A bit of trial and error.

Another one with bent bamboo

Both nets still going strong and both made in the garage with very basic tools.

Both turned out beautifully! I think I might get myself a heat gun to help with the bending of the cane. The gas stove I was using didnt seem to do the job very well!

Heat gun worked OK. Just keep it moving and bend the cane a little at a time.
