Chapman MkIV Carp 550

Post by Reedling »

I obtained a nice clean example of one of these rods a few days back which looks to be in original condition. I have read on the Forum posts that this rod has the bottom part of butt ring and ferrule overwrapped with copper thread, but mine has thread on lower butt ring only..is this normal? The guides are all unlined on my rod also.

My MkIV Carp 550 when I acquired it had deep red whippings so my rod may be even later - the reel fittings were also black which I assume would be stove enameling of the aluminium reel bands.

Anyway it is a fine rod which I much enjoy using.

My rod has green whips and has black reel bands, also the cork end of handle is the ball shape. Transfer of maker is of the black print type rather than gold label.

I have the identical model and am well pleased with it. Lovely rod to use.
The coiled line travels from the reel, it brings up at last, the hook goes home, and then begins the test of skill. "BB"

Official Chapman's site says "Green whipping" - 'early models having copper on the butt/handle ferrule, the bottom 1/2 of the butt ring and on both male & female ferrules'.

Bought from a Member on here and used once with enjoyable results last week!

Taken from Chapman,s website

" Wrappings – Green Early models may have twisted copper wire on lower leg of butt guide, also on male and female ferrule wrapping "

So some did have some didn't.

My Late model with copper whipping on the butt ring only.
