I've never had any problems with casting or tangles either but I never fish this method more the 20 or so yards out.

I imagine Mark, that fishing very close range, you could bait round the float with sinking flake, maggots, worms etc and bring the carp in very close: fooling them that you are bottom fishing and that the floating free offering is perfectly safe...

I am going to have to give this way of presenting a surface bait a try.

Mark, that is indeed very nice to see. I never dared to tell others because it seems so ridiculous to do that. I kept it as a secret and used it in May to early summer when all those white fluffy seeds are flying around which are horribly collecting on the line. This was my way to deal with that. correctly done it will allow you to sink the line under the surface to avoid all those seeds collecting there. When I retrieve line I submerged my rod down to the bottom ring. Otherwise those seeds where collecting at the tip ring and the following and will prohibit a next cast. I used a float that way to enable me still to go fishing under those circumstances. I enjoyed very much the silence on the lakes whenever I did, so I carefully kept it as a secret. I almost forgot about it as since I am using cane I never submerged a rod anymore. But right now there is that fluffy surface problem again and I am very surprised that I did not remember myself. What a simple but brilliant idea. This I must try when I next need a float or controller when surface fishing.
I will often use a p.v.a.bag filled with mixers and simply hooked on, the bag breaks down and you are left with your bait in the middle of freebies. Helps with the duck problem as well.
