Well having only seen very few for sale on eBay in 20 years - I would class the 4.5in - whether proofed or not - as rare or rather unusual, certainly less availability than the 3.75in reels.
Thanks again for the info.
I should be grateful if anyone can offer any information about the alterations to my 4½". It has had the handles removed and the rim of the front flange has been crenellated/castellated.

It has been changed to a 'batting' reel. Leeds style.
The edge of the spool being cut enabling a 'no-slip situation' when retrieving or when playing a good sized fish.
Or for ripping fingers when trying to stop a barbel/carp!
The 6 holes in the centre being used only to retrieve or lock the spool.
I have several but not Aerials!

I know, I mean who did it.

Well they've done quite a neat job of it, I've seen much worse reel modifications.

Not for me - I will use my purpose built ones!
Much cheaper and possibly more efficient with a 5+ spool! And the fingerholes larger.

My latest acquisition
One of only two Brass backplate Sea Aerials made
By the Allcocks factory.
Doesn’t work with the identification tool

Very nice Martin. I picked up a T3 and a Slater "Ideal" from the same seller/collection.
