Been trying Tares again this summer with little success. Strange as I have had plenty of bites on them in the distant past. So far, only one Trout abut 2 1/2 pounds. Those Roach don't want to know. Maybe it has not been warm enough or the Roach are just not there..

One of the better baits, can remember fishing a pairs match at Makins many years ago, started with hemp and tares, then tares and a few maple peas, and eventually fishing maple peas on the hook only. Advantage of the maple peas was that it was fairly easy to catapult out to fish at 20-25 yards against an Island, whereas getting the hemp and tares to the same spot, took a very good pull back with the caddy.

We finished from memory with about 110 lbs, which my maple caught Carp amount to about 95lb. Also has some great Orfe catches on them at Makins on Lizard, throwing the float just past the Island, 3 feet between float and hook (No weight) dragging back to the shelf, and just watching it sail away. That was about 25 -30 years ago - think that most of the Orfe have gone - used to be some 5-6lb fish - went like hell.

Unfortunately on C rods.

All this info is very helpful - very familiar with hemp but less so with tares.
Every day’s a school day on this wonderful forum - thanks all.

Back in the eighties we used to fish the Lea downstream of Kings Weir after they ruined it by channelizing the banks. We used to float fish hemp and tares and the chub and barbel used to love them. Nowadays they seem a very under used bait.
