Having just looked at a picture on Amazon of Arundo donax, Giant Spanish Reed, growing in a pot I can see the resemblance to bamboo.

I also found this comment:-

Could this be the 'tough lightweight bamboo'?

Well done on yet another wonderful acquisition Mal.
In response to the Spanish reed discussion interestingly having browsed through a few of the Hardy bottom fishing catalogues the Ideal Roach rods were listed as made from “whole bamboo specially selected for lightness” in the 1937 and 1939 catalogues and as “specially selected Spanish reed” in the later 1953 and 1955 catalogues. Were they actually the same thing?.
I have an Ideal Roach in the stained green standard finish and I’ve often wondered why this is the only rod in Hardys range that had a coloured finish. Perhaps they were trying to disguise the Spanish reed!
