I was having a particularly bad time at work a few years ago and was off sick with stress. Chris's book, 'The Secret Carp', helped me through that period. His writing literally took me away from my troubles, to a day on a magical carp lake with him. He really did help me through a 'dark time' and to thank him, I was able to give him a pocketsize, leatherbound copy of BB's 'Fisherman's Bedside Book', when next I went down to see him. That visit was the first time my wife had met him, and her exact words were, " what a lovely, gentle man...". A pretty good judge of character is my 'Gaffer', I'd say.

I read the Secret Carp every year - always about this time of year - it just sums up the perfect carp fishing lake in summer.
In fact I have it out ready to start in the next day or so , having just finished Yates's Nightwalk.

I always try to read a yates book as slow as i can ,so i can wring out every single morsel of taste from the magic his words weave in my mind. Im there and im free , its as simple as that.

My all time favourite is still 'Casting At The Sun'.
