Pics of the back show old/unused holes suggests it not new. And that's a he'll of a lot of polishing for a fake. I wonder if it's genuine brass work with a donor spool?
Another one here EBay No 110948936366
I've put a little bid in, because if it's genuine it's a cracker, if not it looks usable.
Looking at this maybe I got a bargain?

Hmm, not sure, unless you troll for pike and salmon. But some jammy chap surely got a bargain here (unless they wobble or are warped):http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280905299672? ... 500wt_1203. Cor, wot a pair!

Probably because all the rich chaps were at Romsey!

Looking good on that late Rodrill!

I just picked up a 4 1/2" Smith& Wall ( I think - it has the pin-and-slot check-plate system, anyhow) - it's Massive! I really wasn't prepared for the extra bulk that come with the step-up from a 3 1/2" reel; if I ever get the briny corrosion off, I think I'll have to take up wreck-fishing.
I was slightly misled by the fact that it had tapered handles; I'd always thought that there was a sort of convention that sea reels had the bulbous "onion" handles, while tapers were used on reels for fresh water. Evidently not!

"Onion" handles for Sea reels? Have I made a purchasing error?
I though this was a salmon reel and therefore would be good for carp also?

I'm starting to think that they were a matter of personal choice; I can certainly understand someone after big pike or Spring salmon - "Spring " in Scotland involving frostbite if there's a tinge of east to the wind - not wanting to risk losing their numb-fingered grip of tapered handles when leviathan finally takes hold.

It certainly won't be "bad" for carp!

I had assumed that wooden reels were really old (i.e older than me :hahaha: ) so I was surprised to see, in a 1968 Reuben Heaton catalogue (item no. 350661476093), that they were still offering them so late on.

Zephyr style from 68/11d (perhaps £50 in today's money)

Starback from 18/11d (perhaps £14 in today's money)

Both of which were much cheaper than a Match Ambidex (133/2d - really expensive!
a Match Aerial (124/3d) or a Trudex (97/8d)
Duffer - The man without skill of hand, without good eyesight and no longer young - the man who really ought to fish!

That IS a surprise. If anyone would like to cash in by trading their Zephyr for a Trudex, I'm willing...
