Well from the above information - the strip was in the Mirror prior to 1949 - when he started fishing.

I believe the Mirror archives are available on line at 'The British Newspaper Archive'. All British newspapers used to be held in an archive in Hendon but I think everything has now moved onine. Did 'Mr Crabtree' began as gardener 'Mr Digwell' ?
