Snap, that is exactly how I feel, I get the same feeling as I did as a kid anticipating a trip to the bank.

So it looks like the most popular way is to point the rod at the bait and hold the line loosely which sounds easy enough. Thank you all for the information, I'm desperate for the conditions to improve so I can try it out now. Roll on autumn!
