From your photo's, that looks like a nice early Aspindales rod, and it looks more like whole cane than Spanish reed. A nice rod that's certainly worth repairing. I think cutting back the damage to sound material and fitting either an internal spigot or a ferrule is a possibility. Good luck with your endeavours.

I've got no idea about what to do best with your rod. But what I know is, that you can rely on the advice given by the gentlemen of the forum.
As you've repaired modern rods already, you won't have any problems with this beautiful old rod of yours.

That's really nasty (the damage) and right down to the node. I fear that it is terminal in the context of putting in a spigot and salvaging the damaged area/length.

Without seeing it, it is hard to say, but I think the best solution would be either a completely new butt or some severe shortening. Sorry!
