I couldn't tell you the dimensions just the 'feel'. The MkIV Avon is very much a through action which describes a 'C' when a fish is on. Its fine for casting light weights short distances but lacks backbone when casting bigger weights or distances whereas the Avon Superb has a more progressive action whereby the rod has a finer tip giving it more 'action' and a firmer butt (ooer) section to give it more grunt. I did own a MkIV Avon for a while and whether or not it had lost some rigidity or not I'm not sure but it sagged and folded like a rope with even a modest fish attached. I know that many MkIV's vary a great deal and that a lot have been hammered and are only a shadow of their former glory but even for one in a pristine condition I would prefer the Allcocks.

The Superb/New Superb are also progressive and have a sensitive tip which makes them more whippy than a Mk IV so they cast better and strike more sharply as well as feeling lighter and more lively in the hand.

Best I can do without a micrometer I'm afraid.

Very nice Mr Burr
Not a fish was visible that first time I visited Beechmere; an utter

has been the cause of several suicides.’

I have just found my 1966 Allcocks catalogue which describes the "Carp Superb" as follows;-
"The Carp Superb incorporates all that is best in the latest design in these specialist rods. Based on the highly successful Allcock 'New Superb' and the Lee 'Carp' it is made in built cane with a 28in long slim handle and fitted with sliding fitting anodized bronze, rubber button, Aqualite butt and end rings and chromed intermediates, and two-tone red/black whippings. In partitioned bag. Ref A238 Length 10ft weight approx 12.5oz (cost) 216/00 ea+ 36/- P.Tax"

It is not in the 1967 catalogue so 1966 may be the last year it was produced.

On the opposite page is the "Avon Superb". Which I have together with the "Carp/Avon" twintip. One of which was sold on ebay for £103 yesterday!

Which one sold for £103 Olly the Avon or the Carp/Avon? Whichever it was its a bargain....... and I missed it. :hairpull:

Oddly, mine is just the 'Superb' which I'd not heard of until it was listed. It is obviously the forerunner to the New Superb which I understood was made in 64. Suffice to say they were only made for a short period which I find odd as they are stunning rods, maybe they were just victim to the introduction of fibre glass.

The varnish finally dried! :Hahaha:

The Superb is listed in the '61 Guide, but not the '59. It last appears in the '63 Guide.

The New Superb appears in the trade catalogue for 1964 when it is described as a new rod.

I remember a famous collector telling me there was a rare three piece Allcocks carp rod...only made for one year and that it was worth a lot of money. I'm inclined to think he meant the Superb....

I was surprised to see it only had 4 intermediate rings...perhaps it's quite a stiff rod and the New Superb more of a through action requiring more rings?

It was a twin tip rod with both the Carp tip and the Avon tip - the "Carp/Avon". I have one. As I expected it to go for more than the recent Allcocks "Superb" at £174! I did not bid, regretfully! It went for only £103 - an absolute bargain!

Sorry David but as said above in my post according to the 1966 catalogue -- the "Carp Superb" was based upon the "New Superb" and Lee "Carp".

Obviously the "New Superb" was new in 1964 and the "Carp Superb" superseded the "New Superb" ----- confused? Nothing new with Allcocks!

From the post above from Nobby the "Superb" was prior to both the "New Superb" and the "Carp Superb"!
