Is it the whole cane bottom version or the all split cane version?

All split cane... probably being made later as in England. I understand some of the earlier ones were whole cane bottom, but, as you said, must be rear now none seen for a while...

They are nice capable rods but can feel a bit floppier than you're probably used to.
The close season is an important and interesting time for the Angler who set out to catch big fish. It is a timely opportunity for him to make new tackle or renovate old. There are no end of jobs to do, apart from those horrible things called Gardens!

What is the difference when compared against a B James Avocet?

I'm not sure but this is a photo from our TFF members book. "Going Fishing With Cane" William Murray.
Looks like a price difference and variety as in the but section..
The Avocet must have been a better quality rod.
Im no expert though... just my findings
