Help needed. SHARPES 9"3 SPINNING ROD

Post by Bobthefloat »

Brought this a while ago, gave it a quick waggle put it in the bag and hung it for a month or two.

Got to my favourite pool last weekend and wound on my pin to the locking reel seat and something didn't feel right.
On closer inspection the bottom female reel holder thingy has completely split!
Disaster, luckily I was able to borrow a rod.

Anyone know where and how this can be fixed?
Any advice would be very much appreciated :Hat:

Sorry, I am German, so I do not know the correct term. Hot soldering maybe? Just as you'd do with copper tubes for heating radiators? If that doesn't work I'd drill and pin it. Maybe some epoxy over it afterwards to seal the sharp edges? :Hat:

Bit difficult to make it out. Is the fixed band or the movable one which tightens up via the thread?

Edit: Ah got it - it’s the fixed one.

Dear Terry Bob Hof and Trevor

The simplest solution is to wrap the split ring in Electricians Tape.....done with care it looks okay and is cheap and replaceable.

The more permanent way would be to attempt a braze but be careful as old ally has a very annoying habit of oxidizing and falling apart.

Replace the whole arrangement with normal reel bands.

Them's yer options young multiple personality.

As ever,......

Another quick fix is a cable tie, possibly with insulation tape to smooth it over.

Easy....epoxy adhesive and drill and pin.
Mines been like it all the while I've had it with no issues whatsoever.

The repair to Jeremy's was undertaken by master rod builder Gary Marshall. I trust the quality of his work implicitly.
