This fabulous reel was buried in a bundle of tackle I purchased a while ago and what a gem. As soon as I picked it up I realised it was a very solid piece of engineering, and in mint condition. It’s a very large reel, so one for the rod rests and big, big carp or pike.
I began some research,
“Worm gear drive with 3 ball bearings (1 on the pinion gear and 1 on each side of the main drive gear) and a 6 disk drag (Teflon/metal drag stack).”
Those seemingly ‘in the know’ on the US forums speak glowingly of these 1970’s reels, built in Japan, and they had some fabulous adverts of their time:
I also found a schematic and details of the full range:

As another 8600 fan said, “…as smooth as glass”
Any other fans out there, I’m now looking for an 8100A?

A great range of reels. Also, a traditional fixed spool at a time when Daiwa were starting to put out mainy skirted spool lines.

Looking closer at the schematics, it looks like the 8100 had a single ball bearing in the pinion, the 8300 had one on the pinion and one in the main drive, with the 8600 then having an additional bearing on the main drive. No wonder it is so smooth.

I won a Daiwa 4300 - (1969?) - Mitchell 300 size. Still have and use it.

That first advert is fantastic. Surely from the pen of a scriptwriter for the Carry On films.
The lady in the picture doesn't look the type to be impressed by anything from the Morrit spaghetti bail arm range that's for sure
That reel is a lovely sturdy looking device with the black bail arm bracket and little red dome on the lock nut adding a bit of style .

In order to shoot some close-ups, wildlife photographer ,the late Len Scapstillon, lured the orca to him by dressing as a seal.......
