I catch myself thinking back to it quite a lot on the river bank wondering what sort of strange recipe Walton would suggest for a fat chub,
Ahhh well, I may be able to help there... for the life of me, I cannot remember whence it came, but I recall a recipe for a fat chub being along the lines of the following...

Take your fish and place him on a stout wooden chopping board...
Descale and gut him thoroughly...
Fillet and debone him as best you can,...
Fill his cavity with as many herbs and spices you can muster...
Coat his body well with yet more spices...
Then throw away your Chub and cook your stout chopping board...

 :Hat:
Just one more cast love, and I'll be on me way home

Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures and memories

Hehe. I just can't believe they are that bad to eat.

Admittedly Polish friends have told me their traditional Christmas carp really is that bad. Mud and needles.

I had a long chat with A Polish chap about this and he told me the right thing to do is to leave said carp in clean running water for several weeks. Often an old bathtub set on an incline is used. After this it is quite palatable.

I'd have thought carp out of muddied commercials would taste foul.

Funny old world. One man's bar of gold is another man's fish finger.

Hunger will change that perspective faster than most might imagine.

Nobby, I'm sure at some point we've all wished for a Findus Crispy Crucian.

I had expected to see more references on this forum to Classic Angling - indeed a recent search revealed none, though possibly I ought to have enclosed the term in "quotes".

I was looking to possibly renew a subscription but it looks like things may have come to a stop in 2014. I think I recognised the writer on occasion at the vintage fairs during my narrow span of attendance.

I read TCA when quite young and found it understandable enough, though a recent effort was more troublesome. I was struck by the odd use of language in today's terms.

Some time ago a chap I knew whose wife was Russian told me that when he visited her parents somewhere near lake Baikel he was told that a chub to eat on it's own was disgusting but no fish stew was complete without one in the mix
