Yes, the silence and darkness of the night can certainly play tricks with the mind.
Fishing on a remote canal, a water vole chews on a reed, and you'd swear blind it was a horse, at least!

As a lad, I used to take my turn doing doing the night shift in lambing time.
All the sheep had been brought up into the "home paddock", where it was easier to keep an eye out for ewes needing a helping hand.
Many a time I was dozing in the hut between rounds, when I was shocked into wakefulness by an old sheep coughing its lungs out.
And I fear that some on here will disbelieve me, but it's a fact that a lamb has shouted to me in the early hours - "Dave!"
