The Hampshire Avon by Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald, 1950
I purchased this book in Ross-on-Wye in the late 90’s on the way back from a fishing trip and haven’t read it for a few years so I have gently extracted it from my bookshelf and placed it on my desk as a reminder to read it again as it was a very enjoyable read.
The Hampshire Avon described by the author as not being a well known river (I suppose in 1950 it may not have been) rising at Avebury until it meets the sea at Mudeford. The author follows it’s journey on foot through Amesbury, Salisbury, Downton, Fordingbridge, Ringwood and Christchurch to the sea. He describes the beautiful countryside, wild life, old buildings and general places of interest along the way. I saw a copy on Ebay a few months ago which went for about £6.00, I think I paid £8.50 for my copy from the book shop in Ross all those years ago.

The most precious places in the English landscape are those secretive corners,
where you find only elder trees, nettles and dreams. (BB - Denys Watkins-Pitchford).

Thanks I've fished various parts of the Avon over the years for both coarse and game fish, so I've splashed out and bought a copy for £1.50!
