Inspired by the work of Every Van Der Plas I bought a sorry looking latch fronted wood reel to have a play with. Conversations with Evert inspired me to believe that with care and patience the reel could once again be back in use bankside.
A strip and clean showed that the reel was basically sound but heavily soiled. The ratchet pawl badly worn, oh and those holes in the back plate!
A couple of days ago I was mixing some epoxy for a nother project so I thought I'd give it a try on the reel rim.
Much polishing, filing, cleaning and colour matching later I have a reel which should appear on a rod in the near future.

Not quite Evert!
I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete.

Good work! Nice, shallow arbour there - is the back of the spool hollowed out for lightness, Sheffield style?

You are probably right Evert. Although I expect I'll revisit this one a few times to practice and see if I can improveEvert van der Plas wrote: ↑Tue Aug 27, 2019 11:33 am Well done Lucky Luca it is addictive to restore the cheap wooden pins so i think it is not the last one for you :-)
