Very niceeely done indeed Seriously - that's a lovely piece of work and the finished rod will be a cracker
Trouble is, it will be so nice that you'll worry about something happening to it and so will need another... uh-oh, I can see where this is headed

Crucian you can never have enough Wizards I think I have 16 different variants from Barder to Allcocks Green stained and various labels with the odd Albert Smith thrown in plus a Tony Croft, Ogden Smith and the Holy Grail of a pure Southwell full decals.
Great rods all slightly different but you can never have enough.

!6 different variants...now that's a lot of Wizards Colin. I'd love to see them and perhaps have a waggle one day.Bumble wrote: ↑Mon Jan 15, 2018 11:07 pm Crucian you can never have enough Wizards I think I have 16 different variants from Barder to Allcocks Green stained and various labels with the odd Albert Smith thrown in plus a Tony Croft, Ogden Smith and the Holy Grail of a pure Southwell full decals.

I understand exactly what you mean when you say that they're all different.
Could I please ask which is your favourite and why?
It's interesting to compare tapers and of course 'feel' between Wizard's from the same period and by the same maker. Take the early Allcock's gold label rods, I don't think I have handled two that felt the same. Some have been lovely, and some not quite as lovely.
I have one rod by Cliff Constable, which although it's a very nice rod, it's almost an Avocet.
My favourite by far would have to be the early green stained Allcocks. It has the lightest action of any Wizard I have handled. This is the reason I am building a replica.

Re: Do I need another wizard?
A little more progress this weekend;
Cane sections ready for roughing out.
Strips straightened and rough planed on the roughing form, to establish 60 degree angles, followed by planing in the steel form before heat treatment. Please note that the strips are over size and not planed to taper at this point.
Through the binder, followed by 40 minutes at 80 degrees C.
Planing to finish size and taper.
Middle and top joints ready for gluing up tomorrow evening after work.
Gentlemen, if I am boring you with this, please let me know...

Thanks chaps, I didn't want it to come across as "Look what I've done"
I would encourage all of you to have a go at making your own rod from scratch, it's very satisfying.
If I can help in any way, please ask. It's not an easy process to begin with, but it's really not that difficult either.
