I'm not familiar with Roddy fixed spools; I know their Hardy Lightweight fly reel copies are becoming quite sought after. From the cutaway drawing it looks like yet another manifestation of the Shakespeare Europa/Galion/Winfield reels of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

I think Roddy reels were made in Japan.

Or perhaps they just look that way?

Definitely Japanese. They (Roddy) may well have been the source manufacturer for the Shakespeare, Galion and Winfield branded reels, much like J W Youngs making reels for Allcocks, Sealey and Milwards as well as under their own name.
