Good evening members. I am delighted to say that I have just joined TFF and I attach a Profile I sent to Mark to join:
In 1957 I was given a book called Mr Crabtree Goes Fishing by Bernard Venables. He said that "If you want to catch big perch you must fish the River Wye in Herefordshire....." (paraphrased)
In 1977, as a keen angler living in Manchester, I thought it was time to take a look at Hereford and its river. I parked by Bowens Guest House on St. Martins Street and dropped down the bank opposite the Cathedral.
On that May day I fell in love with the city and its river; I vowed to spend the rest of my life living here. I drank a handful of river water to celebrate. I had nowhere to live and nowhere to work but I had to stay.
In 2017 I am just so very grateful; and Bernard Venables was right.
I still have the cane Mark IV Avon rod, made (assembled) in woodworking classes at school, that I was using when I caught my first Wye three pound perch. I have PB's for barbel, bream, carp, chub, perch, pike and roach from the Wye and there may be members that are interested in this river.
Semi-retired now I have more time to explore the Wye, collect litter from the banks and do more fishing. ”Look ye also whilst life lasts" – I think BB said that……

Trouble is, the fish just don't read the books......

A hearty welcome, Sir.

Welcome to the Forum and I look forward to some tales from one of my favourite rivers.

Welcome aboard Sir
Not a fish was visible that first time I visited Beechmere; an utter
stillness brooded over the place and I felt the strange and sinister atmosphere which, so the story goes,
has been the cause of several suicides.’
