Definitely a good idea to try before you buy, and take a few pouches of leads before you go.
It's all about the cut; if I load mine up with any significant burden, it weighs down on the back of my neck rather than my shoulders, so is of little use, without a bag or box, for anything other than fly-fishing.

The John Wilson Wanderer waist coat is superb, with all the pockets one could possibly ask for. I've had mine over 25 years and still use it.

The John Wilson is very good but now quite difficult to find.
That's the one I would recommend

I'd take Vole's advice and try a few on before buying. Fishing tackle and most especially fishing clothes are so personal that I think you need to see in person rather than buying blind.
The cut that suits the stature of one person may not be right for you.

Re: waist coat suggestion please
Not wanting to be a wet blanket, but I have tried several waistcoats over the years, some even made with coarse fishing in mind back in the 90s, but I've given up on them except for fly fishing because I always take a bag with me for bait, a flask, sandwiches etc. and can easily fit a small tackle box in as well.
While waistcoats are a good idea in theory, unless you take it off while you are fishing, you are effectively carrying the weight of your tackle etc. all day, whereas you only carry a bag between swims.

Just look for an old Harris Tweed jacket. Enough pockets for some small bits and bobs and it looks good with cane.

As someone just said there only good if your taking a few essentials.
Too much gear and you get back ache.
I cut me gear right back when using the waistcoat then it's ideal.
