They are twin taper rods, so that should be the reason. Not easy to see in the photos

Cheers, what I ment was that just below the tip ring it looks like a big bulge of whipping and I wondered if the ring didn't look too big for the tip of the cane?

The twin taper part is mid way down the tips section. the tip ring just looks badly whipped and not necessarily the right size for the rod. it looks as if the whold rod has been patched up on several occasions
