On this day 34 years ago...
... a record carp was caught by a 32 year old angler from a small pool on a Richard Walker split cane rod, an Ambidex No. 3 Reel using a float as a bite indicator, sweetcorn as bait and the angler had to strike.
This was to be the third record carp from this small pool and sadly will be the last ever British record carp to be caught in this way.
Well done Mr. Yates.

I regard this as the true record carp.

Hear, hear!
I am looking forward to visiting it (but not fishing) one evening next week. It still has the magic....

Towards the end of an era - the last British record carp to be caught on a cane rod and before the hair rig came about. Let us not forget John Carver - the unsung hero of the day.

Definitely the last traditionally caught UK record carp...........so far............ you never know, in the future someone else may catch a record UK carp, or at least a carp bigger than the bishop by using similar tackle and methods.

How depressing ! 34 years ago ? Where did that time go then ? I can remember when the news broke as if it was only last year.......Aaaaaarrgghh..........anyway............I think it might well still be improved upon using a float and traditional methods....everything has a habit of "coming back around again".....so never say never..........I do like that net though...

Just think of all the variables & factors that had to align correctly to make that great photo even possible! its bewildering!
I have a copy of that picture along with one one of Dick Walker holding Clarissa, pinned up inside my wardrobe door (along with picture of my kids & some childhood photo's)
