I really do like that Steve, I am now on the lookout for a 4" wide drum Speedia, not that fussed if there are a few paint chips.Chavender wrote:i did also own a full metal speedia

Thats lovely I may just do that to mineAshbyCut wrote:The spring is late coming ... so I had time on my hands ... and a Dremel ... and I couldn't let those Mitchell chaps have all the fun ... and the finish on the reel was truly awful (is there a paint moth ???) when I got it ... and it was cheap enough to play with ... so here it is ... "Full Metal Merlin."
Not everyone's cup of tea, possibly, but it does look better than it did.

I assume all of the above reels are aluminium or alloy, so why were they painted in the first place ? They all look much nicer without paint and painting them must have increased production cost/time. Fashion ?

Re: It wasn't my fault !!!
aluminium has a habit of corroding if not dried properly ,paint should protect the metal ,but as so often happened water ingress got under the paint and resulting in corrosion and paint loss & paint doesn't show up minor scrates so much.
I try to be funny... but sometimes I merely look it! Steve
Re: It wasn't my fault !!!
Not strictly true, I have a reel that I made myself from 2014 (HE 15) that is very corrosion resistant.Chavender wrote:aluminium has a habit of corroding if not dried properly ,paint should protect the metal ,but as so often happened water ingress got under the paint and resulting in corrosion and paint loss & paint doesn't show up minor scrates so much.
I also have a full metal Grice and young "jecta" that can get a little furry if not dried and oiled.
I would post some photos but the fairys appear to have borrowed my camera lead.

Ah, but these old reels were made from castings or pressings, not machined from solid metal, so they are far more prone to corrosion.
Technically an aluminium casting is porous.

Another Full Metal Ambidex. This one of three I polished up a few years ago. I sold two on ebay but decided to keep this one for myself..
