Bread paste indicators

Not that I have been a great one for Legering but we used to put tinfoil on the line as an indicator, have the bail arm open with a dob of bread holding the line tight in case a fish raced off.

I remember as a kid seeing Carp fishermen at Horton Kirby lakes using pennies and a tin lid under with their cane rods. We always looked on with envy and all crowded around excitedly when a 'monster' fish was hooked. They all looked like monsters to us back then.

I often used just a small bent twig. Nothing fancy! Or sometimes foil from my pack up lunch, if I'd used some.

I was doing a spot of carp fishing at a very special place a couple of weeks ago and took this pic.
I sent it to some modern carp angler friends with the caption

I’m glad this thread prompted some like minded folk to comment. Dad definitely squeezed it beyond the tip ring.
I think an advantage of that method was if he struck - generally with some venom if at distance- the dough would catapult off over his head usually rather than be wound into the spool which I often did.

I am also reminded though of another method of bite detection my cousin and our friend used. While fishing for carp back in the late 70s and early 80s as teenagers, they would balance a 2p piece on the spool, bale arm open.
Directly below would be either their bait box or the closed tin tackle box... when a run occurred the free running line dropped the tuppence with a plop onto the efgeeco ‘amplifier’ below.
They actually night fished using this method.

If only they’d invented the bait runner reel!!

The penny - 1d - was used prior to 1968 (amended to Valentines Day 1971) with a hub cap! After Valentines Day (decimalisation) a penny - 1p - was too small to hear it drop!

If you wanted a heavy coin the 1797 two penny piece was the thing to use - a big lump of copper!

But the 5p and 10p were introduced in 1968! As 1/- and 2/- pieces, "in order to familiarize the public".

I had to alter thousand of accounts to the decimal coinage ie 7/- = 35p.

£1 = 20/- or 240d OR £1 = 100p the next day!
