Whilst reading over the thread, I remembered reading about "Bullocks Pith " years ago, so I googled it, and this rather illuminating link came up.

Thing is, if I set off to the river sans bait, I cant really see me wrestling an uncoperative Steer to oblivion to secure a ready bait source. Think I will stick to worms .
