Edmonds & Lee: Brook and River Trouting

Post by Bobby Marlene »

Every time I go through the pages of this book again it gets better and better. It is so well written and there is invaluable Information in every sentence.
I amglad to own a first edition copy. It makes reading this book even more of an experience. It is a must read for every fisherman, even those who never go after trout or grayling.
Thanks for looking, Bobby

You are right Chris, a must for anybody interested in north country fly patterns.

I have seen a number of deluxe editions, which are 2 volumes, with materials and tying methods throughout, it would be nice to own one of those.

Some years ago a copy of the book written in 1916 fetched £1,980 at a Sotheby's auction

That must have been one of the limited to 60 - 2003 copies - a De-lux version - still selling at over £1000 up to nearly £2000!

There was a deluxe issue of the first edition also. Quite pricey these days:

I was at that sale and purchased a couple of items, some cheap but some off the scale.

I still have the auction catalogue.

Robert Smith's North Country Fly is a nice companion piece for historical detail on how Edmonds and Lee eventually put together the book.

I also have a first edition and probably treasure it the most of my fishing books. Smith does point out though that one unfortunate outcome of their efforts to standardise is that it eventually led to an almost cultish obsession with shades of pearsall silk.

Robert Smithˋs book is very good indeed. I must admit that I like Pearsalls, too.
