Actually looking at the close ups it seems the tube isn't bamboo but turned wood? Oak possible?

You may be right. Both these are Cook shot tubes, the upper one The Whopper and the lower Crabtree. The Whopper is certainly bamboo and the lower doesn't appear to be.
