Smallest reel

Post by Cane »

I recently purchased this simple 1 1/2 inch brass winch which is 1inch across and it soon had me searching through my books for similar pieces. In “ Poles apart ( page 16), there is mention of pole winches of two inch diameter. Is there any way of telling for what type of rod/ pole this was intended? Secondly, does anyone have a similar or smaller winch/ reel, (other than the modern so called poacher’s reel, on a telescopic pen sized rod).
Additional detail: This reel has silk line attached. The bone handle has been replaced. The foot is riveted on with two steel rivets and the sides with brass rivets. The weight is 2 1/2 ounces.
Any idea of date? I thought perhaps 1850-1910??

I have picked a couple up over the years thinking they may be pole winches but I'm not sure if they are just small fly reels to be honest.. These two are 2 1/4 inch x 1inch.

Heres a very small multiplier I picked up at a boot sale.
Only 1 1/2" dia and two to one retrieve. A very compact little reel, it has a silent drag and an optional ratchet.

Such a pity that so few of these have the name of the maker on them.
